Medical Coding Specialist

ASU CE offers a medical coding specialist curriculum online through our partnership with Trident Technical College. This online program is a stand-alone curriculum and is not the same as our campus program.  If you need more information about this, please contact the Program Coordinator.  A coding specialist reviews and analyzes health records to identify relevant diagnoses and procedures for distinct patient encounters. The coding specialist is responsible for translating diagnostic and procedural phrases used by health care providers into coded form. This coded information is used for medical reimbursement purposes.

The curriculum is approved by American Health Information Management Association. To enroll, you must be a high school graduate or possess a high school equivalency diploma (GED).

The complete course sequence of 13 courses, including an online internship, begins each January, May and August. Although the curriculum is designed for the student to take two courses concurrently, a student may take one course at a time. Taking one course at time will delay completion of the curriculum in 3 semesters.

To begin the online Medical Coding curriculum requires a phone orientation (706-737-1636) with the Program Coordinator at ASUCE for Medical Coding and Billing. Register for your first on line medical coding course by calling our registration office or mailing a check or coming in person to our offices in Galloway Hall. After you begin the program, we will continue to guide you through course selection to keep you on track and you will be able to register online at a special registration page.

All internet-based courses have specific objectives for learning and instructors are available to ask questions when a topic is unclear. Students ask instructors the questions via e-mail, chat room sessions and bulletin board discussions. Each online course has a start and end date, and each instructor sets specific deadlines for assignments, quizzes, midterm and final exams.

Students must have "off-campus access" to the following:

Pentium processor or MAC equivalent
